Juneteenth: A Freedom Celebration

Juneteenth: A Freedom Celebration

Saturday, June 17, 2023 (1:00 PM - 5:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Please bring your family, friends, and colleagues out for our 1st Annual Juneteenth Celebration of Freedom. We are so excited to join as a community at Dulles Golf Center and Sports Park to commemorate the freedoms of enslaved African-Americans in the United States. We will have music, food, activities, games, and more. So leave your business attire and cards at home because it's time for us all to recognize the strides African-Americans have made over the past 158 years.

On June 19th, 1865, six months after the 13th Amendment was passed in Congress, Major General Gordon Granger and the Union Army marched to Galveston, Texas, to enforce the emancipation of all enslaved people held in the states. We call it "Juneteenth" because those who thought they were still enslaved in Texas found out on "June 19th" that they were free at last. In 2021, legislation was signed into law that made Juneteenth a federal holiday after the world was put on notice after the summer of the "Racial Awakening" of 2020.

So on this "Freedom Day," it is essential that we come together to remember where African-Americans have come from, the impact we have made on the world, and how bright our future is looking moving forward. And if you haven't been to a Black Chamber Celebration, you are in for a fulfilling and fun experience.
